HELL FUNERAL

A surreal singleplayer RPG map by AlanSpirand (1.29.2 or higher classic version, unsupported on Reforged; ~2 hours playtime)

Your character has just woken up from a strange dream, feeling dizzy. She has issues with her memory, but there are several things she knows for certain: she is a mud golem who goes by the name Mudallia, the shore she woke up on is owned by a fishlike creature who spends its days catching and gutting humans who swim around in the black tarfalls, and there's a funeral of her good friend Slimerian she has to attend with an undead skeleton priest. Something is wrong in this mystical place the locals call "Hell". The wells here talk, the trees start uprisings for putting their branches into campfires, and the regular everyday concepts are flipped on their heads, barely making any sense to an outsider. However, Mudallia has a far more serious issue to worry about: her heroic quest to defeat the greatest evil these lands have ever known, The Dark Wizard atop The Dark Tower.

Join the two strange characters in an absurd yet meaningful RPG adventure. Interact with surrounding beings by using your main hero's "Talk" ability, capable of providing dozens of unique dialogues with quests, jokes, and lore bits. Utilize the entirely custom selection of abilities and items, including SIX secret items for the most attentive players to look for throughout the map. Fight unique bosses with special mechanics that will need to be learned and counteracted in specific ways. Eventually, overcome the obstacles and face the Dark Wizard face to face in order to finally bring peace into the land of Hell Funeral.

thecatamites - for creating an RPG maker classic "Space Funeral", by which this map was heavily inspired and, in some ways, may even be called an hommage to.

Jayborino - for hosting his annual "Maporino" event which motivated me to work on the map to submit it in time (this particular project was a Maporino 2023 submission).

My friends, family, and those I rely on in my life - for supporting me through the toughest period of my life which started in 2022, and allowing me to continue focusing on things that I find interesting and inspirational, which in turn brought this project to fruition. Hopefully, it won't be the last!

* 17.04.2023 - Uploaded
* 22.04.2023 - Fixed a bug due to which the same cutscene near the mines would trigger twice, resulting in the game being softlocked
* 24.04.2023 - Nerfed a couple of high-level enemies by reducing their hp to keep some fights from going on for too long

* 29.04.2023 - Changed one of the dialogues leading to a secret item to make it less confusing
* 01.05.2023 - Added 1 more neutral NPC in the city area as well as one additional encounter available after defeating The Mayor, also fixed pathing in the city park
* 28.05.2023 - Fixed some more minor bugs

Not sure why the Egg destructibles are called barrels. Barrels are called Egg Sacks. I'm beginning to think, it's deliberate. Used a Gold Ingot on the big Bloodog Count Claw was fighting and I think it broke the triggers for continuing as interaction...

I just did a quick play on the map. After breaking out of the prison once I ended up there a second time slightly backing away from the oncoming pigs and this time I couldn't get out. Without a game save I was unable to complete the map. Is this intentionally done this way or is it a bug?

Most likely a bug, but it's a bit unclear to me what exactly you're describing. Do you mean the heroes teleported back into the cell they were originally in? Did it occur before or after you finished off the Lawmaker bossfight and left the jail building through the gate? And did the cutscene also repeat? Because if it did, it might be some trigger firing twice for some reason.

Did it occur before or after you finished off the Lawmaker bossfight and left the jail building through the gate? And did the cutscene also repeat? Because if it did, it might be some trigger firing twice for some reason.

1. I took dust from the Lizards and put the mine guards to sleep. On the way out of the mine, they caught me and put me in prison.
2. After clicking on the little men, I got out of the cell, fought with the pigs, and then I defeated the dragon.

Oh yeah, must've forgotten to turn that trigger off somehow. Sorry! Seems easy to fix, though, I'll update the map and make sure it only works once.

She's a great hero indeed, teaching us that you shouldn't stop trying to achieve your dreams even when you became a giant pile of dirt... Dunno how useful this lesson is, but a pretty nice one for sure.

I finished the map at 1.30. This time I tried to dig through it and to be honest I didn't find it half as interesting as 'Saving Innisbrook'. I couldn't figure out how to get to the item in the Hall of Mirrors also failed to find what they had stolen from the Great Chest. Do you plan to expand this project in the future?

Disadvantages: (1) some objects + essence of life are too close to each other and positioning them with the mouse is difficult - you point to one object (or essence) but it immediately jumps to the other and vice versa - loop effect. (2) (maybe) The battle with the Black Wizard was the easiest to win of all the battles so far (they didn't get to kill me too many times until he got to it! :smile: ). (3) A mud golem with the clear voice of an elf sounded strange to me. If the voice must be female, at least let it be rough. I think any rougher voice would be more appropriate.

Pros: I liked the "Decreasing" system that you use when the character is killed, and the difficulty level is perfect for the casual player. The ending was unexpected. Map without problems.

Here's a little more work. Here you have to keep in mind that I am using the Rebirth mod so this anomaly may not exist. It works like this: after you kill the Golem it crumbles to the ground and the characters move on, but when you move away from its remains (so that they are hidden from the visible area of the screen) and then immediately go back to its remains.

Thanks for playing! Well, I suppose it is quite different from "Saving Innisbrook", as that project was that giant opus that I aimed very high with and spent many months working on. This one was set to be far shorter from the start since I didn't believe the concept of the map itself (Such as the absurd reality gimmick and all the jokes that come with it) would not outstay its welcome if played on for too long. So it's something you can complete in one sitting and (hopefully) don't end up feeling like you've wasted two hours on nothing. Some additions are possible, I suppose, as my first map also received quite a bit of quality-of-life changes after release.

The nothing golem thing is odd, might be an issue with the model's animations itself. Will check it out! The wizard might've gotten over-nerfed a little since I reduced his hp as the third phase originally destroyed many players who couldn't manage all those nothing constructs spawning during his teleportation.

* To gain the mirror, you have to pick it up with a hero that doesn't have any items on him, hence "no litter", but it might've been a bit too vague, I'm unsure. I came up with this wordplay in my first language and it's possible it didn't translate too well.

* The chest's secret is the hardest one to obtain. There's a way in the far right side of the tower where the blood drawings begin. Your heroes cannot fit into the narrow entrance, but your pet rock can! There you'll meet a giant creature named "little rat" who will attack, but you can only kill it with spells. So you can aggro it with the rock (or the sailor spawn, if you have him), then lead it out of the tunnel and kill it with your heroes. It'll gift you a cool staff that can refresh the cooldown of your abilities once in a while.

  3. Mudallia has no hero glow. It can simply be added: How to add Hero Glow without Modeling
  4. Would be nice for the firemen not to say the same thing, all of them. Same with the Piguardians.
  5. The circle of power near the physician in pig city or what's it called has its selection circle too low/under from the model.
  6. I've cast the sleeping bag spell on the pig before talking to him and the triggers didn't let me pass into the mines. I used the Z hotkey ability on him while he was sleeping and then I could pass.
  7. Heroes selected during the prison cinematic scene.
  8. The law maker is quite easy to defeat as he focuses on the count which can just move around while the rocks hit him.
  9. During the pause scene with the mayor, the heroes are being attacked from a distance by long range pigs in the park.
  10. Kind of useless to get to buy tomes of retraining when you're already level 10. Also, two tomes of power dropped from two Nothing Constructs, also useless.
  11. The wizard remained selected during the meeting cinematic scene.
A lovely absurdist satire RPG with the most pressing downside being no replayability value.
