Frozen Centaur [Chapter II Update]

Bwahh!
Probably one of least favorite model in the game. When your in game model and portrait are completely different.
Whichhhh made an idea of this. Admit it folks. If you see original model of centaur or centaur khan, their face are derpy to the point making the head is headache.
Anyway, here is the Frozen Centaur. It's a icy variation of your beloved half-horse and half-man (?).
Enjoy! Stay Cool!
The texture can be used in normal centaur as usual. You can choose to remove helmet in model file below.
Version 1.0Released.

Decent highlights and shading. The centaur has a horrible wrap, but you did a good job. I would suggest using the model as linked to above for this texture. Thanks for providing an ingame screenshot.
Let me allow myself to be the first to review the skin. So I want to start off by saying that I really like the skin, it's unique, it's cool and it's for a model that AFAIK doesn't often have skins made for it so props on all front. Indeed the quality of the texture is really high and if I'm not mistaken it is all free-hand?

I like the cartoonish of the whole skin from the bold white and blue of the axe to the cloth and blue gems that really fit in quite nicely with a lot of Warcraft 3's texture style. Since I know you have a lot of talent when it comes to drawing I'm going to list a few things that I think could be improved; don't take these as me being harsh/nitpicky but rather just my thoughts on what I personally think could improve the skin since I know you're capable of making such good textures and I'd like to see one get DC hopefully hence some of the criticisms might seem trivial or small I think they're all worth mentioning.

  • some of the shadows could be a bit darker/more pronounced. Whilst the skin is cartoony and you've got the hard part of the skin done i.e. making it look good with a nice aesthetic I think the darkest recesses like the abs and curves of the muscles could be darker/blacker as right now they're a bit grey.
  • I appreciate the face wrap is... very poor on the model but I think the face is the area that needs the most work, I don't know exactly what needs done but just the level of detail combined with the poor wrap means that I think you're definitely capable of making it look better.
  • So I can tell that for some bits you've drawn them and then copied and pasted them on, which is smart and not a bad thing to do but when blending and merging parts together you should perhaps redraw over where they join on so that the transition looks more natural like the diamond pattern on his fore arm with the rest of his arm.
  • The only other criticism would be that maybe the horse body and shoulder pad could use a little more detail imo, however this is purely my own opinion and it's up to you whether you take it on board.

Overall a lovely skin which shows off an impressive ability to create textures of a high quality and cool, cartoon aesthetic which I really like. Therefore I give it a 4/5 and if the things I've said are taken on board I'd be happy to give it a 5/5 :) Very well done.

Hey @Footman16 , thanks for taking time review my skin. I glad you like the debut texture and I managed to adjust some of the part you were addressed.

This explanation post is pretty long so i put in spoiler, just open one to read any point you want.

I agreed that the skin is already cartoony and that is probably my main style when doing texturing. Especially the axe that was colored to match to snow terrain (specifically Icecrown Citadel - Northrend).

The shadow part while i managed to make it darker in the current state, it's already dark enough giving the in-game shadow. You already address that this model may need more extreme shadow which may added if necessary but personality i think after adjusting, it's probably enough. :peasant-ok-hand:

That's the true problem with the centaur model, it's face wrap is so bad to the point I pity the original face of the centaur.

The face was adjusted again for someone need to use Ujimasa Hojo's optimized centaur like stein123 shown up there. But detail wise for the original face will stay remain with only slight change (no more mouth leak).
Full explain about lacking centaurs skin (not completely full really) is below the post in the similar thread. (If that ain't here then fine, here).

This one wouldn't change current state given that how messed up original model ruined the whole guideline. I'm sorry :peasant-bowing:, it's not possbile to fix it unless i decide to redo the whole thing. I try to redo it and end up result the same with limitation 256x256.
  • The only other criticism would be that maybe the horse body and shoulder pad could use a little more detail imo, however this is purely my own opinion and it's up to you whether you take it on board.
Shoulder pad was latter adjusted because i found out there still leak in the portrait. It's difficult like problem 3 where og model ruined the shoulder pad as well. So for the sake of it, I decide to change shoulder pad border out.
Horse body, like how both of us explain that they could need some texture. I change the horse body and remove white spot on it (because horse doesn't have a shaved spot) but wouldn't added any more detail because he remain simple enough. This ain't polka dot horse.

So after your review, the texture does changed in a much difference. Feel free provide more point about it.

Just in case someone curious why is this texture remain 256x256 ? Normally you see like 3 centaurs skin over this section and with this possibility to make him with a lot of effort for such handicap. Expect history will be MADE. :peasant-notify: This year, the centaurs will have their place to stand above the forgotten.

The frozen centaurs are an excellent addition to the artic places like Northrend. I mean, if the polar furbolgs exist, why not frozen centaurs?

Just one tiny, quick, and harmless question/curiosity, will there be frozen centaur archers?
If you replace with normal centaur instead of centaur khan, you will end up replace centaur archer as well.

Ah, silly me... why didn't I think of that before? Duh...

Anyway, I gave both skins a try with the centaur archer model and both worked perfectly, and the bow seems to be made of ice, which looks pretty cool and unique to their kind. Niiice...!

The Chapter 2 Centaur looks good, I'd say it's a nice variation on the original and his new parts reflect the style and quality of a lot of the parts of the original, therefore artistically there isn't much to say that is new since anything said artistically about the original applies to chapter 2.

However I do like the new variation, adds to the diversity of the Ice Centaur people :)
