FlyingSpearThrower

Model info:
I made this for the Modeling Contest #17.
I took the base idea of Leonardo da Vinci's flying machine sketches, but made my own concept out of it. For usage as military unit I added the spear ballista.
The model only uses ingame textures and has a portrait camera, team colour and the standard animations (Stand/Walk/Attack/Death).

Background lore:
Only the stongest warriors can become Flying Spear Throwers, as it requires a lot of strength to hold the kite up in the air. But as the kite doesn't need any noisy engines, the Flying Spear Throwers can follow their prey unrecognized by silently gliding far above it and then striking down unexpected at a low angle. For weight reduction, the warriors are only equiped with light leather armor which however makes them vulnarable to enemy archers. To make up for this weakness they are armed with heavy spears which are fired off by an attached ballista. But because of the fixed angle of the attached ballista the Flying Spear Throwers can just attack ground units and are nearly defencless against other air units.

Pls give credits, if you use it in your map.
Have fun with it :)

I like this model, its very quirky. HOWEVER, a lot of the details are on the underside of the wings, no one will be able to see it from the top. I guess that could be a good thing for cinematic purposes, but for gameplay functions it could be a major flaw.

Thx for all the nice comments!

sorry but from the screenshots i cannot see any ballista attached to the kite.
Yea it's supposed to be the spear throwing construction beneath the warrior. If you look at the animations you'll probably see what I mean. I didn't really know how to call it anyway, maybe it's more of a catapult, but as you shot spears with a ballista and not with a catapult I named it ballista.

Your're right, but I didn't see a way to change that really. First I thought about adding some decoration stuff on top of the kite, like a shield, more spears etc.
But they didn't fit really because they would be useless. So what could you really do on top of such a kite, what would be usefull and good looking?

Why on earth would you attach that horrid spear thrower skin/model to your hang glider?

Because I wanted to use only ingame textures to decrease the file size and make it look more 'Warcraftish'.
Also I really like the spear thrower skin compared to other ingame units ... what unit would you propose to be used instead? :eekani:
Besides I think the spear thrower fits very well as light armored warrior, or is it just because Blizzard used him as bandit?
If you would want to use another skin you could also just replace the spear thrower texture with another texture fitting to the texture wrap.

Yes, the best variant if you dont like the skin of the spear thrower(I am weary of it as well) is simply to find a skin for him on Hive or any other site. Then he would automaticly change here as well.

For example you can use this skin as it is much lighter.

One thing you can do to reveal the details under the wings is to make the canvas on the wings just slightly transparent. I myself am not entirely sure how to do it but it's an effective method of revealing hidden details like the spears hooked to the frame. The transparent canvas could be described as making the fabric thinner to reduce weight.
