----------------

Control Soul Reaver, Fei Serumen and Cameron Aileron as they try to aid the Druids of Heart Grove in their battle against the fearsome Juggernaut.


Installation instructions:
--------------------------

Put the .w3x file into a folder named "To the Bitter End" (without quotation marks, obviously) in your Warcraft III "maps" folder.
You can play the game by starting The Frozen Throne, then selecting 'Single Player', 'Custom Game', and then navigating to the map and selecting it.
It helps to have your video settings for Warcraft III set to high quality, or some custom skins in some of the campaign might look a little... weird.


Difficulty:
-----------

To the Bitter End is supposed to be very difficult. However, for those finding it simply too tough, as of version 0.7.04, I have added in variable difficulty levels. Once in-game, press Enter to bring up the chat window, then type in "easy", "medium" or "hard" (without quotation marks) to change the difficulty of the current Chapter. The default difficulty is "hard". Note that the only thing this modifies is the HP of enemy units, and enemy hero units are less affected than normal units are.

Remember though: real heroes play on hard!

This is the third of a series beta releases, it is suggested you play this one after Chapter II: The Dream of Blood and before Chapter IV: Heart of Ice.

To check the version number of any of your TTBE maps, type "version" (without quotation marks) into the chat text in-game and it will display (or if nothing displays, then your version is definitely out-of-date). The newest versions are always available on the official site.

Although I am solely responsible for creating this map, the central characters featured in this campaign, as well as the Multiverse in which it is set, were envisaged by the writers at The Administorum (http://theadministorum.yuku.com/) and its newest incarnation, the Administorum 2.0 (http://nerdramblingz.com/starforums/index.php).

This was my first serious attempt at a campaign map, and my first release. I was going to wait until I had completed the campaign in its entirety before releasing anything, but at the request of one of my Administorum friends, I decided to release the completed Chapters here. Since the campaign itself not complete, this classifies the maps as beta releases. Unfortunately, with all my current commitments, it may be some time before I get all the maps done.


Some known bugs or issues (with suggested workarounds):
-------------------------------------------------------

- Does not automatically start Chapter IV: Heart of Ice on completion. (Workaround: start it manually - your characters from Juggernaut should transfer into it fine.)
- Some of the characters' textures look strange. (Solution: set the texture quality in the video settings to the highest available setting).


A word on cinematics:
---------------------

- It is possible to skip any of the cinematics, just press ESC.
- One 'bug' that occurs if you skip the cinematics is that any items or abilities that might have 'cooled down' and become available over the course of the cinematic will now not do this. This means that if you want to use those items/abilities often, you may have to wait around more... and if there's a timer counting down while you wait, that might not be advisable. This isn't a major thing, but it does mean that the game might be more difficult if you skip the cinematics.
- You are advised to watch the cinematics at least once. They will often give you instructions as to what to do next and offer clues as to what to expect. Making sense of the game plot without them would be pretty difficult.
- If you want to be sure to experience the game how it was meant to be played, then don't skip the cinematics. That's how I planned the level out and how I spent the most time testing it.


Hints/Notes:
------------

- You can play this map even if you haven't completed Dark Dawn or The Dream of Blood. You'll start with a hero with an appropriate Experience level and unused skill points that you can spend as you see fit. But only Morganem's lackeys would play Chapter III without completing Chapter I and II first, and surely you aren't one of them?
- Use your quest log if unsure of what to do next... that's what it's there for.
- Read the tooltips if you want to know what an ability or item does. In fact, this is strongly recommended.
- Your items are re-usable. However, they have long cooldown times. Save them for when you need them, and then unleash hell.
- Your items are powerful, but by now your abilities are just as intimidating. Especially your ultimates.
- Sphere of Annihilation and Cataclysm are appropriately named, because they will pretty much obliterate ANYTHING in the target area. That includes things you might prefer to keep un-obliterated, such as yourself.
- When you gain a level but your skill points don't seem to have increased... well, it's probably because your 'basic' skill has levelled up automatically. Don't worry, it's a point well spent.
- There's a stringent time limit for the first part of this map. Don't waste too much time.
- The time limit makes it difficult to familiarize yourself with the abilities and items of your new character. It is probably a good idea to carefully read the tooltips for them once first, then restart the game and pick the abilities you actually want. This is better than glossing over them and thus wasting skill points by picking the wrong spells, or wasting valuable time reading them all carefully.
- The acorns you are asked to find look like shiny bushes - careful that you don't miss them amidst all the other shrubs. They're usually rather well-guarded.
- The Juggernaut is immensely tough and nasty. You'll never manage to beat it in a single assault - you have to wear it down. Once your characters are looking like they're going to die, it's a good idea to retreat to Heart Grove, heal up, and then get back in the fight.
- Try to leave yourself some room for making a quick escape. Use abilities like Celerity carefully, and make sure you don't get yourself trapped between the Juggernaut and your allied troops.
- Try to stay out of the way of the Treemen - they're slow and have trouble moving around you, and will slow you down too if you follow directly behind them.
- You will not reach your maximum experience level in Chapter III. Obviously.
- Your quest is likely to be quite tough. SAVE OFTEN.
- Don't expect to find Raziel from the Legacy of Kain series in this game. I've been using the name Soul Reaver for my RPG alter-ego since long before even the first Blood Omen came out. The Soul Reaver in this map is an original character.

Storyline FAQ:
--------------

Q: What the hell? Why is there a guy running around in futuristic armor, fighting alongside guys using swords?
A: Almost all of the Companions come from different Planes (ie, universes) in the Multiverse. The character you're referring to is from a technologically advanced world in a technologically advanced Plane and thus has technologically advanced equipment. His 'powers' aren't so much magical as they are psychic or based on the natural powers of his (almost extinct) race. But although his equipment is high-tech, that doesn't mean it's necessarily better than an enchantment-laden blade or magical suit of armor!

Q: Wait, what 'species'? He looks human!
A: He's not really. He's actually an Elemental - a race of hyper-evloved humans that have some control over certain 'elements' such as fire, water, air and earth. In this case, he is a fire-aligned Elemental. He is the descendent of a race of humans that were stranded on a distant planet aeons ago and followed a separate evolutionary path.

Q: Wait, wasn't there once a character called 'Clutchfiend'? Why is he called 'Cameron Aileron' now?
A: Ah, retcons, the bane of my existence. The guy who invented the character of Clutchfiend recently retconned his background (and name). Since I liked the changes he made though, I incorporated them into To the Bitter End. Thus, all references to 'Clutchfiend' have been changed to 'Cameron Aileron' from version 0.7.04 onwards.

Q: What's the name of that cool song you used for this map?
A: "Tikal", by "ES Posthumus". Buy the album, it's worth it.

hey i finally beat dream of blood! oh wow juggernaut is twice as hard lol- clutchfiend owns tho- he never seems to be in real danger

-chapter 3 beat - wow the juggernaut took a while to best

Congratulations on defeating the Juggernaut, and good luck with Chapter IV! And yes, as long as you keep Clutchfiend out of the front lines his abilities are quite devastating.

Excellent map, was barely able to beat it. That AOE fire spell that the Juggernaut has is a goddamn pain in the a**. Btw how much health does it have? My guess is somewhere around 300k-400k XD.

Anyway, the only bad thing I've noticed is the too large collision size of the Treemen. It is sometimes nearly impossible to avoid them. But that aside, this is one of the best maps I've played in a while, nice work indeed.

The Juggernaut has 60000 HP and 20 (fortified) armour, so it's pretty tough. Good job on defeating it!

The collision size of the treemen is a real pain, yeah. Making them smaller would be strange though.

I think the real problem is that the Warcraft III AI doesn't properly handle the pathing around them - I usually just micro the heroes with some waypoints to keep them away from the Treemen when I attack or retreat, that usually keeps things more managable.

manage to beat that oversized tank in 15 minutes:grin: I found that the best way to do it was swap your hero in and out as the take damage so that you allows have 1 hero fighting and 2 resting. This makes it ezer to dodge that imba flamestrike

That's a good strategy! Splitting up the party to avoid the area of effect from the Chaos Firestorm will significantly cut down the total damage it inflicts, and keeping a hero attacking the Juggernaut at all times will basically halt its advance (and give the allies a chance to get into position).

Congratulations... and good luck for Chapter IV!

Well, that was difficult to say the least (which naturally makes it ridiculous fun), but I finally found a strat that worked pretty smoothly. The animation the Juggernaut makes prior to the flamestrike of ouchiness is pretty distinct. If you're quick with Clutchfiend, his fireball attack (forgot the name) can usually stun him in time to interrupt it. The flame graphic will still show up, but it will do no damage if you get him in time. Interrupt it just a few times, and before you know it, the creeps numbers will grow enough to take him on. Soul Reaver's stun attacks work as well, but take more prediction than actual timing.

You made some interesting bosses in this campaign, that's for sure.

Thanks Gederoth. I've always been partial to using flank or rear attacks against the Juggernaut, and just running away like a scared little girl when the Chaos Firestorm starts, but I think your strategy would work very well.

And I'm glad you enjoyed the boss fights, they're supposed to be a highlight. :)

Im really enjoying this entire series as a whole. Im currently in Chapter IV, but chapter III took me awhile. Similar to what other people have done, i switched out heroes when injured and used both Soul Reaver's and Cameron Aileron's stunning spells to slow the Juggernaut down. After a good deal of loading and saving, and a few spheres of annihalation, the Juggernaut was slain. I'm enjoying TTBE incredibly, and i'm pretty awestruck how you put so much work into your series. Thank you for creating such a great experience, and keep up the good work :D .
