Matches model, but i think theres too much black space, and the sword object is too small.
Id try to zoom in on the hilt near the handle a little. Just an idea.

Hmm would one of these be better?

Although it does make better use of the space, I think doing it this way obscures the shape of the whole thing a bit too much.
But any tips are welcome, I haven't really focused much on icon making.

You won't get better results, unless you actually edit the screenshots you take.
HappyTauren, once again, has good examples of how small edits can increase a screenshot icon's quality.

Screenshot icons have very limited potential - depending on the respective models.
The corresponding model here is too thin to actually provide much you can work with.
So, either stick to the very first version of your screenshots (they represent the weapon the best - it will become harder to tell what it's actually supposed to be)
or put more effort in to it, and include edits.

I love these. Personally I'd use the second (bigger) one, like how Blizzard do theirs. Hey if you end up submitting the small(er) one can you also post these ones or perhaps even make a bigger one? I really want to use these, I'd do it myself but yours probably will look better!

Ah yes, I see he has added some cloudy effects to the background of his sword icons.
I'll need to think if I can do something similar in a sensible way.

True, that's exactly the dilemma with trying to represent a long thin sword in a tiny square box.
Either I put the whole thing there and sacrifice detail, or I focus on one detail and sacrifice the overview.
I personally prefer showing the whole thing.
