Only thing i would say to make it more shield-like is too make the shape more like an actually shield.

Ok, I'll redo the top corners so they are more defined. I have to go for now so I'll post an update tomorrow. Thanks for the input, it's appreciated.

It does look some-what like a shield now, But what is the top part of the shield? the dark red stuff?

It's supposed to be the tops of the flames, to give a sense of heat. The pics of fire i looked at typically had random flickering above the sorce being burned.
