It is much easier to see and understand now, nice.
I like the first one as well, but it still looks like it has too much going on. May I request you darken the background, where the blood isn't spurting?
I did huge edits on 64x64 size, I'm afraid I can't properly remove some parts of the background now. Do you need it or that's just a suggestion? Because it looks pretty fine to me.

As Mythic mentioned, it looks crowded and the overall redness has deepened the confusion for me.
I suggest "merging" both variation, giving the striking axe' side a lighter orange/yellow basing on V2, while darkening the victim and apply better shadings on his blood basing on the first version, it would be easier for viewer to differentiate both sides and understand the idea behind this icon.

Tried to apply few changes based on my own thought but failed hardly, I discovers that it is because of how the icon was executed in a greedy way that tries to include three factor in one (Weapon:Sfx:Victim), right now the focused factor are the sparks with other bloodmess.(3:5:2)

The best I could do is to clean up some of the bloodmess, re-position and increased the sfx' for the swinging motion, mainly to bring out the striking axe more.(4:5:1)

Do try to pick one subject to focus on, be it the axe or the victim, right now it still looks like a sparkling blood mess and hardly more, good luck.
