Black Hole

This was a quick model i threw together after noticing how the whirlwind texture from the blademaster kinda looks like a vortex.

It is supposed to resemble a black hole, the way they actually look. Even though a black hole in itself cannot be observed, the immense gravity causes attracted matter (usually gas) to flock in a disc-like shape around the black hole, forming a so called Accretion disc. In the area nearest the center, magnetic forces causes some of the gas to shoot out in jets perpendicular to the disc - sometimes these jets can become thousands of lightyears long!!

I based it off these references: Ref1 Ref2

This model uses only ingame textures, and should be useful for space maps. Note that the tail particles of the jet cannot be seen in magos, only ingame.

UPDATE: Made the disc more luminent/less translucent, modified the jets, and added a black dot to its centre.

UPDATE2: Added a glow layer to the disc.

the size looks a little not proportional :/
the whirlwind is a little bit too transparent..
and it doesn't have a lot of black hole feeling in it. IMO
Looks good in my opinion. The quasar is a plus for this model as a real black hole would have. Also the accretion disk could have been larger. Black holes tend to gather lots of matter around them, even swallowing whole stars. I like this Fingolfin. And the file size is good also.

agreed about the quarsar..

Dispite it looks nothing like an actual blackhole, it's an interesting model.

Read the description.

It looks more like a quasar, a white hole. Wrong name, nice model. (4)

A quasar is just a supermassive black hole constituting the centre of a galaxy. Any black hole can gain an accretion disc, and it usually occurs when it is in the process of "swallowing" a star. "White holes" are just hypothetical "reverse" black holes which have never been observed in reality. Please do your homework before you try to correct people.

To the people who think the disc is too small - the jets are usually many times longer than the radius of the disc, and i was just trying to illustrate this. I did some changes though and made it about 20% larger, and more bright. I also added a black dot at the centre, even though it is not really accurate, it kinda better matches the way people imagine black holes i guess. Thank you all for your feedback.

EDIT: This is how it looks ingame now:

This looks wonderful... But it's not all that useful, considering the lack of animations. Right now it could only be used as a stationary doodad in some space-themed maps and whatnot - but what if you gave it "Birth" and "Death" animations? Maybe make an alternate version, where it "floats" slightly above the ground. I think it could potentially be a really good spell SFX model.

This black hole looks cool, but looks like a quasar a bit. But looks fine, maybe make the hole bigger.
A quasar is produced by a black hole!!! Actually the black hole is tiny, the accretion disk is large not the singularity itself. As for the jets emitted by the black hole, well in reality those are spread out on thousands of light years as Fingolfin said. As for Deolrin's example, it would be interesting. Anyway great model Fingolfin:D

A quasar is basically the name astronomers gave to a certain galaxy shape before black holes were discovered. It was later found that these galaxies were formed around huge black holes, and that the jets were produced from it feeding on nearby stars getting sucked in.

You are right. Remember the singularity ability that motherships used to have in SC2 Beta? They kinda looked like this, didn't they? It could be a pretty cool ability. Only problem i see, is that you would kinda have to make a choice. You might want an ability SFX to be more vivid in its motion, but when making this, i imagined it being really really massive, and thus the vortex movement is really slow.

What are your suggestion for the animations? Perhaps it could start with a hole, and then the disc kinda explodes outwards while fading in, and finally the jets extruding outwards. How would the death animation look?

Read the description.

You did not get my point. It looks nothing like a quasar from the picture.

My advice is, make it's alpha (geoset animation manager) animated with 0:1 so it's color does not fade. And make an actual vortex more flashy.

Moreover, you could add a half transparent glow layer to the vortex. This ain't hard dude, come on. This could realy turn out a neat effect.

Correct me if i am wrong, but this looks more like it.

Sorry, but I'm agreed with him.

I tried adding a GenericGlow layer onto the whirlwind material, and it turned out like this:

It looks good, if not a tad too luminent in my opinion. This applies to all three vortex planes though, so you could lessen the brightness by adding the glow to a separate plane with its own material. What i liked about the old one was how it looked like it warped the space around it, what i like about this one is how it looks more like a cloud. I haven't made up my mind yet, what do the rest of you think?

A really useful model for terraining matched with your Asteroid models with different variations, one can make a space terrain with these.

Though giving this some animations would also be better as what Deolrin said such as Birth and Death. As an additional, some animation would do more. Try making an animation of this where it's Stand Animation is faster, the rotation's faster like of a blackhole raging.

Anyway, great stuffs as always from you. What could we expect more from your stuffs, +rep.
