Battle Mage/Cleric

This bundle is marked as pending. It has not been reviewed by a staff member yet.
Hi! I've been using HiveWorkshop on and off since I was a kid, well over a decade ago but never made an account. I felt like people could use an unmounted mage-like character, so I had been experimenting with a few model options when it occurred to me that the Paladin variants would make for great mages because of their tomes and animations, so I decided to modify Dagren into a sort of battle mage with a scepter. I left his original spell particle animations as is, so he will seem like more of a priest. I suppose I could re-upload a version without spell particles, but I don't know how to make particles.

I just got into making models recently and I've been working on a few model projects these last few weeks but this is the first one I feel confident enough to post here right now. Still learning how to transfer animations and finding what works easily and what would be too time consuming.

I just want to see more decent quality models on the site, so I hope this contribution helps, and I hope I can successfully make more useful models as I continue to learn.

UPDATE:

I decided to change the pauldrons to something that matches a little better. It occurs to me that the name of the model doesn't quite suit the look I ended up with so I've changed it to "Cleric"! I'll leave up my original model in case anyone prefers it, but I think the new pauldrons look neat. I think this model now has more team color than any model I've seen, vanilla or otherwise!

Cleric (Model)

Cleric (No Glow) (Model)

For some reason, facial animations work fine on the glow version but not the "no glow" version and I have no earthly idea what caused this, as the only thing different about the models is whether the glow emitter is there or not. Unless that has something to do with it, I'm at a loss. If anyone has any ideas, let me know and I'll see if I can tweak it.

It looks kinda good man ! Didnt try it on a map, so couldnt see the little problems it can have, but first impression is a very good one :peasant-thumbs-up: Good job !! Keep going with your practices, I'm sure you're on a good way and thanks for your contribution :ogre_haosis:

Awesome mode! Loving battlemages! The only thing I'd want more is a second spell animation. The one we got here is really holy and the body movements themselves won't fit with most spells :D

I'll play around with the model a bit today and see if I can find a more "offensive" spell animation. I'm unsure of whether or not I'd want to attach new effects like with the ones he has now or leave it as nothing. Could also use his regular attack animation for some spells, but I'll see if I can find another animation that doesn't look weird. Thanks for the feedback!

Your first model? Looks good. I like the idea and keep up the good work.

But I have two things that I would like to throw in the room:
The shoulder armor doesn't quite match the model's stature and optics.
The sorcerer's apprentice fills them out better.
But because the shoulder pieces have no texture inside, you can look through them without any problems and that looks strange.
Perhaps the elven priest's shoulder pieces would fit a bit better, both visually and thematically.
And then a little thing in terms of lore:
Can you somehow cover up the symbol for the "Silver Hand"?
There were some paladins in Warcraft, like Lord Duncan and his entourage in "The Day of the Dragon", who saw damned souls in mages.
They accepted them on the battlefields, but I dont know if the "Holy Order of the Silver Hand" would accept magicians in their ranks.

Fair points! I did actually think about the symbol and noticed the texture issues after posting, unfortunately. I'll take a look at some options for the shoulders and see what I like best. As for the emblem, I may be able to replace it with something a little less conflicting. Thanks for the feedback!

I couldn't figure out a good option to cover or replace the girdle entirely without the animation becoming wonky, but I added pauldrons from the Chaplain model and I think it makes for a good "cleric" type unit/hero. Feel free to modify what I've done so far if you're so inclined. I'd love to see what you (or anyone else) come up with.

I think the silver hand symbol on the belt needs to be replaced. Have you tried to transfer the Priest Spell Attack animation? It might work but have not tested it yet. Good first model attempt!

I tried replacing the symbol by covering it up, or by replacing the entire girdle but it ended up looking really wonky on the animations. I reviewed a few options for another attack/spell animation but unfortunately, most of them either disfigured the model significantly when I tried them, or they just looked too similar to what he already had. I'll keep looking, and maybe I'll come up with something that works eventually. Thanks for the feedback.

Hello there.

'Cleric' is such a generic term that other custom models also use that name, making me unable to import Cleric.mdx into my map (as I already have another Cleric.mdx).

It would be great if the name could be somewhat made more unique in order to reduce the chance it conflicts with another custom model.

Thanks in advance if you're making this change!

That is a weird issue to have, since, you know, a model's name means basically nothing and changing its name to fit whatever is your need changes nothing about it, in fact I'd suggest changing the model's name yourself to avoid the issue you're describing.

What you're saying is, I can modify the 'cleric.mdx' file name by whatever I like and it won't break the link it has with its textures or whatever?

Going to try it out right now, thanks a lot and sorry for my lack of knowledge.

EDIT: It indeed works instantly. Though I have a question, how does it behave if the model were to have a portrait? would I be able to simply rename both (newname and newname_portrait for instance) and it work as well?

Yes, exactly, as long as they have the same base name it can be either "_portrait" or "_Portrait" (or probably any combination of capitalized and non-capitalized letters, I don't think that is case-sensitive)
