Balrog Of Moria

I was really hoping someone would one day make Balrog model...At least some decent....Nothing. So I created it myself. Then I thought someone would make a texture for it...Nope....So its me again, using ingame textures. I might find some better one day. I am opened for suggestions. Its not the best model I ever made, but i guess its the best Balrog model there is. I added some small flying animations, nothing extreme, because in my opinion Balrogs dont fly (that much....). Anyway enjoy and if yomeone wants to make texture for it, tell me I will make different wrap and we can make something epic out of it.

Anyway i guess its good to have even ingame textured versions, due to lowering filesize.

Dont forget credits and See you soon on the next model.

Yours -SvH (Sellenius von Hellman)

.. shouldn't his wings be leaning little more to the back? it kinda doesn't look that nice from the usual warcraft camera angle, he's like fearful something would drop on his head :p

the wrap kinda feels messy as well, not too sure what can be done about it tho..

and anims.. well you got other people commenting about them, i'm just gonna say arms are sometimes wonky

I will work on him, definitely. Just needed more opinions of the people. About his wings...well... I was inspired by the balrog from Battle for Middle Earth, where he has wings really like this. I had his wings more on the back, I thought they look better like this. I might try to get them back.

Pretty cool already. But I think his actual skin should be darker, nearly black, without too much lave cracks, and there should be more flames and fire around him. Also I think colors of fire are more towards orange, than red. (I like this picture http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/158/3/d/lotr__balrog_by_arkis-d52nfzr.jpg)

I could imagine this model using the dark, glowing skin of the transformed demon hunter in demon form (or just something very dark). Then there should be plenty of fire around and I would suggest using a better fire effect than the current one. Finally, add some red-glow eyes and it should look quite cool.

An awesome balrog, and they do fly btw. ;) Anyway, the fire on him looks kind of static so I recommend the use of an animated texture (the lava cracks layer moving slow and then an overlay add alpha lava cracks, moving fast in the opposite direction to give it some more unpredictable, fiery appearance.) And maybe some sparks when the whip cracks?

Looks awesome, but you really should've used praticles (atleast the viewer doesn't show them...?) and animated textures. Also, there a places from the lavacracks texture with brown patches of dirt, so I suggest trying other lava cracks texture.
The mesh and wrapping is kickass though :)

The hive viewer does not show particles.

@Sellenisko: Nice model. I'm sorry i never got around to texture it, though i feel like you have done a well enough work with the wrap to make the ingame texture work as it is. I hope you keep making lotr models, it is perhaps the biggest genre in wc3 mapmaking, and all models made for it are guaranteed to be used by a lot of people.

Nice job! My only suggestion is that you should make the model a bit bigger. I know we can make it bigger from the editor but that messes up particles. The models default scale is really small for a balrog.

Very cool dude, I was looking for a demonic unit to use as a mini hero and this is perfect. Although the wings are a little upward and it should be more to his back. Anyway I like it what it is right now, in game textures, low file size and awesome model indeed. Hope you make an icon for this.

Move quite alot like the one in War of the Ring.
Wish there were a better texture, but as you said, you'd probably have to do it yourself.
Either way, nice work with ingame textures, and the custom animations, though rigid simulate very well the War of the Ring model.

It took me a minute just to stop staring at it and start writing a comment.

This is awesome. As awesome as doom guards may be, it's about damn time somebody made a good balrog model so we can stop using them in its place in all our lotr maps.

Great use of in-game textures, great file size, the whole thing is incredible and I especially like the whip.

The only thing stopping me from saying this deserves a DC is the fact that its animations are simply too stiff and need to be smoother, with more arcs and less straight movement.

By the way, you might want to improve the head and horns to look more like the inspiring concept. It would take a lot of words to describe how to make them look more alike, but thankfully I think you can tell pretty clearly by looking at them.

5/5.

I decided to upgrade the model, because somebody is making new custom texture. So i will mote the wing s a bit to the back and will try to improve some things all of you suggested.

InfernalTater: Thank you again. Will try to o my best. I thought too its time to make some better balrog... All versions of Balrog i found was only some strange moifications of ddoomguard with even stranger custom textures...andd well..they were even worse than the normal doom guard...Anyway, lets get back to modelling :D

Hey, good changes, but I've noticed something else.

During the spell animation, the whip doesn't lash properly at all. It's like a bar stuck in a bent shape. It should have a sort of "bump" that moves from the handle of the whip to the end as he lashes out, with the whip straightening behind the bump as the bump moves forward up the length of the whip, reaching the end just at the end of lash.

This also definitely needs some variations to its animations so he isn't doing the exact same thing over and over again.

with inagem textures
Well, it definitely would have been even more amazing if you did that with actual ingame textures :p Regardless! It's still pretty damn awesome! Good job both of you! @GhostThruster @Sellenisko

New animations you say? I'm intriqued! Seriously can't wait for it to be released. A year?! You should upload it now, and update it later! I need this in my life! At least with the new texture! :)

And for a secret modding project *shush*...

One thing I noticed - in the game, you cannot select its flying form, but can select its ground form. When using it in game, the only way to select the flying form is to select with a box, and it won't respond to direct clicks. Seems its flying morphed form cannot be selected - this should be fixed.
Edited: 8/8/22, because I noticed that I made a typo. And I can see that it still has not been updated/fixed.
