Minimalism%20Logo.jpg

Theme:

I'd like you to make me a terrain following a minimalistic design.
That means less doodads and less details, no grand open vistas of
endless forest and detailed castles, but simple and creative tiny
details that enriches the viewer with wonder.
Creativity is key.

Judging:

I'll handle it, although I would appreciate a second pair of eyes,
so if anyone feels like volunteering to be second judge, throw me
an apple!

Deadline:

07.04.15 (dd.mm.yy)

Reward:

25 Rep for the winner.

Special Reward:

50 Rep for the winner, if the winner is an old-timer
that hasn't been active in a while. I know you guys
are still lurking!

Less doodads seems a bit misleading. I took that as the less doodads you use the better (unless that is what you mean). While it's true that you will probably use less doodads, the point isn't to use less.

Or am I wrong?

I'm seeing a lot of confusion here. I assume 'minimalist' is equal to 'less is more'. Try to tell as much of a story with as few assets as possible.

This is more of an artsy competition versus 'build as awesome of a landscape as possible'. I think I might join if time allows.

That's literally what he meant.

How can I join?
Make a terrain depending on a camera angle, screenshot it and post it here. It's preferable to post at least one WIP screenshot before the final work.

@Keiji you forgot to remove the mini-contest theme poll notice.

He's literally saying what I literally meant. Heh.

And I don't see how it's misleading, in context it
reads:

That means less doodads and less details, no grand open vistas of
endless forest and detailed castles

Basically, no grand open vistas of endless forest and detailed castles, less doodads,
less details. It doesn't necessarily mean less is better, it just means: "Don't throw
a screenshot of outrageous doodad amount at me." - Unless you can, creatively,
make a terrain seem minimalistic with a lot of doodads.

Now, Gilles, get started terraining.

How can I join?

You join.

Instead of minimal doodads you should do no imports :) I'd like to see what people can do with that :)

That would be a completely different kind of contest,
it's been done a couple times before. I don't like the concept.

I want to join since I like minimalist things.
But I don't quite "get it"

What am I to create?
An example would be great.

As you wish.

2 Different approaches here. Both need a lot of work still. If I can get the shadows to look better, I'd prefer that style, but right now it looks bad.

Having trouble creating reflections without using actual water tiles. Tried fladdy's method of using waves, but the terrain is too bright right now for them to appear.

Edit: You may have issues viewing this depending on your display settings. f.lux kicked in for me now that it's night, and I can no longer distinguish the different tones that separate sky and water and whatever.

Now I'm noticing that the contrast is much better on the images on my computer compared to the uploaded ones here. Odd.

This could serve as an example, something simple and artsy, basically.

Or, you could look at Gilles' WIP.

That example isn't wc3. I thought we are to use wc3, not photoshop.

Gillies example serves well though.

That hurts.

You do know that accusing a terrainer for using photoshop is like standing up in the
middle of a preaching and telling the priest to go f*** himself, no? >.>
- It's disrespectful and extremely rude.

Wait.. am i an oldfag?

You haven't been "not active for a while" though :/

I'd say it's like accusing someone of cheating.
As I already said, it's honestly a huge compliment to your abilities that he didn't think it would be possible to do in just the wc3 editor.

But how the heck did you pull off the greyscale, flad?

Texture editing perhaps.

***************************************************************

So, I started on this idea I call the 'Meditator'. Its a WIP.
I was testing the doodads here, including the meditating man. It is by no means the final camera setting, I still need to work out the lights and fog settings before settling on the camera. Shared this because it is ceremonious to share WIPs, so....

Edit: I converted the pic to jpeg at 75% quality so there is some pixelization if you zoom, sorry for that.

Edit 2:
That example isn't wc3. I thought we are to use wc3, not photoshop.
I can personally vouch that Keiji and all other prolific terrainers here don't use photoshop to glamorize their works.
Its plain countless hours of hard labour and creative streaks of ingenuity that you see in the terrains. Nothing else.

The waves I see how you did, that's just a minor model edit of the rope-cable doodad.
But how the heck did you pull off the greyscale, flad?

I guess that he desaturated the textures in Photoshop and added some contrast to it.
Either that or he's a fucking magician >:)

Nice one NKnight :D

Added NKnight001 to the Entries list in my first post.

This is what I'm hoping for, the photoshop idea is plain boring.
Sorry to disappoint, but yeah it's just texture editing. I couldn't come up with a way to do it natively in the editor. I investigated doing it with animated DNC light models but then I realized gray light doesn't exist.

That said, it's not like all objects are desaturated. It's actually just the dead tree, the gates and the grass. The rocks are just tinted grayscale-ish and the unit is just darkened so it seems like he blends with the gray tones.

Hot damn that's sexy. I don't care for the green waves though.
The color or the waves themselves?

The waves themselves. They make the terrain more busy and I don't like that they go over the model. I feel like they obscure more than they add to the terrain.

The Matrix

So here's what I got now. Ditched the other idea since I felt like it didn't fit the theme.

wip-sh....

Updated

Now to search for an adequate female model and some fitting effects.

Done.

*notices unit model close to the camera, gasps in horror*

Try either moving that sauropod (the one in the lower left corner) farther away or remove it since it's ruining the scene a bit.
Also those Blizz rocks are a NO if used closely to the camera, move or replace them with felsen, same goes for the grass.

There's a looming end of the world feeling to it, try making the transition more smoothly between the sky and the ground, glows and some raises in the background could help.

The sky is okay-ish for now.
