Battle.net:

Battle.net is the official multiplayer platform for blizzard games and of course, including Warcraft 3.

To find melee games, any server would do, but Northrend is said to have games start the quickest.
To find public custom games quick and easy, it's recommended you use these two lists as opposed to the ingame list:
makemehost.com/games.php
entgaming.net/forum/games.php

These lists show many of the Bnet public lobbies, most being cross realm and some being cross server. You can also find a list of known active clans here if you would like to play with some of them. Basically, any realm for English speakers would do except for Kalimdor (Asia) to a point.

There are numerous ways to host on battle.net, each with their own pros and cons according to each individual.

1. makemehost.com
MMH is a partner of Hive and supports us. It's easy to user host through them. No registration nor download required.

2. entgaming.net/link/host.php
ENT is also a partner of Hive and supports us. Hosting through ENT connects to B.net and 3rd party servers at the same time (Info). No registration nor download is required.

3. Forwarding ports
This is known as the original way of hosting. While it does work, do note that this only hosts in the one b.net realm you are currently in. This usually equates to slower game fill up times.

4. Personal bots and clan bots
There are multiple places where you can buy, rent, or freely own a personal clan bot to host. There are a number of clans that have their personal clan bot where you can host through on their channel, though. Some are even partnered with MMH so that you can see their public games on their site. Simply find what you want on google.

EntConnect:
Also known as econnect and Enterprise Connection. No CD key is required. Basically allows players to join and host ENT games which are hosted on Battle.net, Eurobattle.net, and other services like Garena to a point at the same time. Information.

Garena:
Garena hosts a 3rd party server. More information can be found on their site, though people may comment to add information here.

GameRanger:
Gameranger hosts a 3rd party server. More information can be found on jonhysone's post #4.

EuroBattle.net:
EuroBattle.net hosts a 3rd party server. More information can be found on their site, though people may comment to add information here.

Tunngle:
Tunngle hosts a 3rd party server, more information can be found on DaneTheBeast's post #1.

Ranked Gaming Client:
RGC hosts a 3rd party server. More information can be found on their site, though people may comment to add information here.

W3arena:
W3arena hosts a 3rd party server, is a melee community, and is most known for being a place for tournaments and banning hackers and cheaters. More information can be found on the W3arena site.

Tunngle:

1. To register click on "Register now" in the top right corner. After registering you will need to confirm your e-mail.

2. To download go to http://www.tunngle.net/en/download and click on "Start Download" and once you are on mediafire click the green "Download". Installing is pretty straight forward, just follow the instructions.
YOU MUST RESTART AFTER INSTALLING.

3. When you launch Tunngle you should see at the bottom of the screen text fields where you put you username & password, fill those in with the ones you used to register. Click login.

4. Find the seach box (On the left or at the top left) and type in "Warcraft" find "Wacraft III: The Frozen Throne" and right click on it and select "Add to Bookmarks". Double click on it to join its network. Done.
Now launch Wc3 and go to LocalAreaNetwork and you should see games.

Questions: "Why add to bookmarks?"
Because when you launch Tunngle again instead of searching for "Warcraft" you just go to your bookmarks and you will see the room there.

Problems: Stuck at Connecting the adapter/Could not initialize the Tunngle network adapter:
1. Turn off firewall or try to put Tunngle into allowed programs
2. Run Tunngle as admin
3. Set Tunngle's adapter to the highest priority
More info: http://www.tunngle.net/wiki/Error:4-109

Can't see any games/Icon is yellow (The icon in the bottom right corner of Tunngle):
1. Try portforwarding your router so it accepts their port 11155
2. Go to Tunngle settings and check "Use uPnP", restart tunngle
More info: http://www.tunngle.net/wiki/Port_Forward

Gameranger :

1- Go to Gameranger Download Page and download the Gameranger's client, it should have a very small size.

2- Run the GameRanger Setup application.
Open the file GameRangerSetup.exe and click Install.

PS : If a message appears asking if you are sure you want to run this file, click Run.

3- Create a new free account :
GameRanger will prompt you to create a new GameRanger account or use an existing one, and you will need to enter your valid e-mail address. You should use the address your friends are most likely to know.

4- Activate your account and log in.
Within minutes you should receive a confirmation e-mail to activate your GameRanger account. If it's not in your inbox, try looking in your junk folder, and mark it as a trusted-sender, or "not spam." Adding the sender to your address book is also a good idea.

5- The Gameranger home interface :
Gameranger is really easy to use, it doesn't require ports' forwarding, now you should see some "Age of empire game lines" with some colored bars near them, and a number like this '10/10'. That list represents all the games supported by Gameranger, even if you don't have 'em installed. Now There is a scroll tab above (under the ad) , click on it, and choose "My Games". Now by default, all installed games (which can be found in Windows Games in Start-Menu) should show up there. If not, then you'll have to add them manually.

6- Adding installed Games manually :
There are some tabs at the top of the home screen, (Just like File, Edit, View, Help in any program), now click on the "Edit" one, choose "Options", you can find over 600 games there, they are alphabetically-sorted, you can find Warcraft III + Expansion there, to the right you should browse the game, it should now pop up in "My Games" window.

7- Some notes :
You have the ultimate ability to block, remove, add or look for users, either by their ID, E-mail, or username. You can do that by right-clicking a user's name and do what you want. And you can search for people through (User => Search).

8- Frequently-Asked-Questions (FAQ) :
Q1: Why, when I host some game, or try to join one, does it say "NAT Router Problem" ?
A1: That's probably because the connections are too low (High ping) or there is some Firewall stopping it (Antivirus), the best solution for this is to restart Gameranger, or restart the router (modem).

Q2: What's that coloured 5 bars in every room's line ?
A2: That's actually the latency (PING) , the more it's filled, the smaller the delay is, the less the lag is, and the more enjoyable the game will be.
Latency-o-metter
5 Bars Green : Latency 01 - 50 ms
4 Bars Green : Latency 50 - 110 ms
3 Bars Orange : Latency 110 - 180 ms
2 Bars Orange : Latency 180 - 220 ms
1 Bar Red : 220 - 300
0 Bars (Gray) : 300-999 or UNKNOWN (Nat Problem)
Any other questions are listed here : Gameranger FAQ Page

NOTE : Please if you have any questions , send me a PM , I am using Gameranger for 4 years, and I don't think it's so hard to adapt to it.
