LITHION'S AWAKENING - Campaign
Created by Veritas 117

Map Info

NOTE: There are a lot of screenshots, videos, and other updates in the thread that have not been added to the OP

Way way, too early, but I don't really care cause everyone has been so patient... Lithion's Awakening Alpha Test (Exploratory and Testing)
JNGP required to view it in world editor. Start with Dillianhor Forest (The rest don't really do anything yet) You can get to Callienth Mountains by going to the far left of the map about halfway down.

This is a large single player campaign where you use 3 heroes and travel to distant lands fighting new and mysterious foes.

There are many RPG aspects added in without having systems that are so complicated that it turns players off from it. The easy to use and ability based combat is fun and simple, but you still have to be on your toes when fighting bosses.

This campaign will allow players to travel between maps (travel to a map and then back again) at will. The game cache system itself is complicated, but moving between maps is as easy as walking to a region and clicking yes on a dialog box.

I've worked hard to include details that are rarely seen, small things like re-selecting your heroes after you interact with something so you don't have to reselect them yourself and slow down gameplay. Other small details like hiding interiors after you leave the building are also included. I want the map to have a more realistic feel while still having an amazing fantasy-filled world and storyline.

Story so far

The map has a great storyline full of depth and mystery to keep the player moving forward. There are also a number of side quests to add variety while still relating to the main storyline.

==========The Balance of Power===========

There must always be a balance
there can be no light without darkness
there can be no good without evil
power is a constant
what we choose to do with it decides everything

Milian is a vast land on the edge of the Great Selthic Ocean. Power has ruled over the land since the beginning of time. There are many sources of power throughout
Milian. Some use it to rule, some to lead, and some to control, but power is needed by all.

Wars are fought over the various sources of power, the scales are tipped, but the balance always returns.

There was something hidden in Milian, however, that could force an ultimate unbalance of power. A secret, known only to a small race unknown to many. A race of
some hundreds or less that held a secret power capable of tearing at the foundations of Milian herself. And then it happened...

It began, all at once it began.
The oceans churned, the skies darkened, and the earth cracked and split. The Demons of Gareth had come.

Demons are driven by one thing, not control, not dominion over life, nor the urge for destruction, they are driven by power. The Gareth Demons were drawn to Milian by the strongest source of power they had ever felt. Somehow, they had discovered the secret that had been kept safe for thousands of years.

The Coming of the Demons was upon Milian at last, and no one would go unaffected.

=====250 years later=====

The Demons have changed the lands of Milian forever, they burned everything in their path in their relentless pursuit of power. Men, elves, dwarves, and orcs all
stood together to push the demons back. Thousands perished in the seemingly unending conflict.

The Demons, having exhausted the source of power they came to covet, were pushed below the Asydian Sea in the scorched land now called Southgareth.

Even after 250 years of war and death, the land of Milian has once again seemed to regain its natural balance. Small bands of elves and men gather as Demon
Slayers. They hunt for Demons that travel from Southgareth in search of power. For years smaller and weaker Demons have all but exhausted their power that they
crave. They are forced north into the free lands of Milian where they are hunted and slain.

Lyrius Windsage, an elf of Dillianhor and the Sage of the West, was one such Demon Slayer, and in the Palenthos Wilderness near the Southgareth border we find
him.

=====3400 years later=====

=====Lyrius' Death=====

Lyrius and his Demon Slayers have gained intelligence about a Demon that has traveled into Palenthos. They have been tracking him for 10 days when they find him
near a small village.

The company find that despite what their intelligence suggested this Demon is far from small and weak. The reasons that would force a large powerful Demon
from Southgareth would be very disturbing. The group knows that they have too few to defeat a Demon of this magnitude. They also know that they cannot allow
the Demon to wreak havoc on a small unprotected village. The choice, difficult as it was, was very clear. The hunters had no choice but to lure the monster away.
The risks of Demon Slaying are known to all, their duty is to protect others no matter the cost, even if that means death. They are all prepared, ready to die.

The Demon is even more powerful than they had guessed. The hunting party is decimated. Lyrius Windsage, in a last defiant effort thrusts a blade imbued with his
very soul into the chest of the great Demon.
As the Demon crumpled to the ground a strange thing happened. A great light sprang forth from the Demon's body piercing Lyrius' heart. The elf fell to the ground,
but had an enormous feeling flow through him. He felt an immense power he had never felt before... but it was not enough. The thrust that threw down the Demon
was the last the brave elf would take.

=====This is where our story starts=====

The light from the Demon springs from Lyrius and shoots through the air. It penetrates water, rocks, trees, and mountains heading farther and farther north.
We follow the light into the western edge of Dillianhor Forest. A small town of Windalis where an elf sleeps restlessly in his bed.
The light leaps into his home and penetrates his heart just as it had done for Lyrius. The elf sits bolt upright and cries out, "Father!"

Lithion Windsage, son of Lyrius Windsage, and High Protector of Dillianhor Forest, knows his father is dead. Confusion now sets over him, for in his hour of grief
he cannot help but feel an enormous amount of power...

We start with Lithion hearing from a runner that he has been called to Hillsdurrow, the City of Trees, and the capital of Dillianhor Forest.

========The Fall of the Demons==========

The Demons were pushed South of the Asydian Sea where they waited and corrupted the land. They sat in what became known as Southgareth. The men of Palenthos took up the charge of keeping the Demons at bay. They built a great fortified city to serve as an outpost for them to protect the only landmass that allowed a path north from Southgareth.

The men of Palenthos enlisted the help of the warrior Orcs to combat the Demons. Soon, however, the orcs became little more than slaves. There was a great uprising that lead to the mass exodus of the orcs to the east. They formed a land called Terenon after the leader of their rebellion that was captured and executed.

The men of Callienth dug into their precious mountains to await the eventual return of the Demons, the dwarves too fled to the mountains.

The elves were left with one last stronghold in Dillianhor Forest, that is where they still reside.

After the fall of the Demons the alliance that pushed them south was broken.

Demons continued to wander Milian from time to time in search of power, Demon Slayers formed to hunt and destroy them.

==========The Division of Milian=============

Milian has been divided into 5 independent nations, though some loose alliances exist to prevent war, they are far from friendly with one another.

---Dillianhor---

Dillianhor is where the elves live and they keep to themselves wanting neither land nor power. Lately they have had problems with their borders being breached by outsiders. Their capital is the Forest City of Hillsdurrow ruled by Galiflien, the Grand Warden of Dillianhor. The council of Sages is also located in Hillsdurrow but the Sages themselves are scattered among the four border towns of the forest.

---Callienth---

Callienth is a small nation in the Callienth Mountains. The humans of Callieth are taller and stronger than normal humans. Callienth has an outpost in the barren Craterlands but they hardly control it. Callienth and Dillianhor have had a loose alliance for centuries. The basis of this alliance is that neither will attack the other or try to claim each other's lands as their own. They would be hard pressed to be seen aiding each other in battles.

---Palenthos---

Palenthos is also controlled by men and is the most powerful of the free nations. Palenthos controls Skire as well as the majority of the Asydian Sea. As the greatest naval power in all of Milian they aim to increase their nation in the Selthic Ocean by seizing control of the Deleshar Islands where they are currently doing battle. Palenthos has also claimed the Forbidden Mountains as their territory though they do not have a colony or outpost there.

---Terenon---

Teranon is a loose alliance of clans on the Eastern edge of Northern Milian. Many of the orcs fled to Terenon after persecution by the men of the south during the Age of the Demons. Now Terenon exists without a leader or capital. Its clans quarrel with each other but when one clan moves to take control the remaining clans rise up to stop them. The clans also work together to keep invaders at bay. Mera is a human settlement in Terenon South of the Dagger Cliffs with a port on the Bay of Besfal. The Dredmarsh and Dredwood also lie within its borders but are not settled by any clans.

---Southgareth---

Southgareth is under the control of the Demons and their slaves, The Plague. Everything south of the Asydian is under the dominion of the Death Lords of Southgareth. They have also claimed Dredwood as no one has bothered to try and stop them. The evil in Southgareth is the single greatest threat to those that dwell in the lands of Northern Milian, yet Palenthos has taken it upon themselves to force Southgareth's Borders below the Asydian.

--There are a few unclaimed areas around Milian that are either quarreled over or left abandoned by all--

The Edge of Seas is a forsaken frozen wasteland that has long since been abandoned. This was once the site of an ancient nation of warriors that managed to capture a General of Kilkazar's Plague Army. For centuries he has been trapped in the ice, shunned by Southgareth and feared by others. His ancient prison will hold him for thousands of years until time changes fate once again.

The Dredmarsh lies to the South of the Forbidden Mountain. The land has been abandoned and consumed by the evil that resides within the mountain and the Cursed Tower. The forsaken swamp has swallowed everything within its borders. Now the dead and the cursed wander its waterlogged wilderness, unsleeping and waiting for foolish travelers.

The Forbidden Mountain lies at the northern tip of Milian. It is impossible to climb to the cursed tower that stands at its peak. Within the tower lies an evil Book of Spells. Long ago Palenthos mages formed together a spell book of unimaginable power. No spell was spared from the book, no matter how unstable and dangerous. Due to the danger of the book the hierarchs decided it must be destroyed, but the book had become so powerful that the Archmages could not destroy it. They instead created a portal to the Forbidden Mountain and placed it in the tower. They then destroyed the portal from their side sacrificing themselves to seal the book away from the rest of the world.

Some other stuff about the campaign

Wonderfully detailed terrain, numerous quests and items, much of what RPG fans really like, not to mention an amazing story full of mystery and depth

199238-albums6032-picture105167.png

Lithion Windsage is the agility (damage) hero and is the greatest bladesman in all of Milian (the epic world where the story is set). Despite being born blind he has a grasp of the physical world unlike anyone else. This allowed his instincts to fully develop, his free-flowing style of combat is almost like a dance. With a blade (or two) Lithion Windsage is unmatched.

Lithion gains spirit (mana) for each attack he deals. The amount gained per attack can be increased with certain items.

Lithion's Abilities (so far) (screenshots soon)

- Deadly Slash -
Instant cast slash spell. This hits enemies in front of Lithion. There is also a chance to throw 5 spinning blades that cut through enemies and deal damage in a line.

199238-albums6032-picture70041.png

199238-albums6032-picture70040.png

199238-albums6032-picture70080.png

- Hidden Daggers -
Instant Cast AOE DOT spell. Lithion unleashes a flurry of hidden daggers that hit nearby enemies dealing damage. They also bleed dealing damage over time.

199238-albums6032-picture70079.png

- Wind Razors -
Target a unit to throw a spinning blade that seeks out other nearby enemies. Enemies hit take damage and are stunned.

199238-albums6032-picture70077.png

199238-albums6032-picture105166.png

Hundalor Earthsire is the intelligence (healer and damage) hero. He is captain of the Rangers of the Grove and is adept in elven magic. He can manipulate and control the elements in powerful ways. He is Lithion's good friend and companion on this quest. He studied magic as deliberately as Lithion studied swordplay and together these two are formidable to any foe.

Hundalor gains spirit (mana) every second. The amount gained per second can be increased with certain items.

Hundalor's Abilities (so far) (screenshots soon)

- Light of the Sun -
Target a friendly unit to heal them. The healing effect bounces to other allied units. There is a chance to fully heal the first unit hit with the ability. There is also a chance for the spell to cause a super heated nova around the targeted unit dealing AOE damage to enemies.

199238-albums6032-picture70078.png

- Arrow of the Clouds -
Targeted AOE spell that summons arrows from the sky to fall in a targeted area. Each arrow deals damage to any unit it hits.

199238-albums6032-picture70042.png

199238-albums6032-picture105165.png

Glainor Hammerhelm is the third hero and is the strength (tank) hero. He joins forces with the other two early on and is a soldier of Callienth (a mountainous region to the west of the forest). Glainor is uncommonly strong and brave. He has a little skill in magic, but it is his unwavering courage that sets him apart.

Glainor doesn't use spirit (mana) instead it is used as a shield. He holds a shield and takes damage in the form of mana until it's gone. He then loses his shield and takes normal damage again until his shield is 'fixed'.

Glainor's Abilities (so far) (screenshots soon)

- Battle Cry -
Instant cast spell that causes Glainor to shout. Enemies are forced to attack Glainor. This spell also increases Glainor's Might, Lithion's Skill, and Hundalor's Spirit for 10 seconds. The armor of Glainor is also increased for 10 seconds.

199238-albums6032-picture70130.png

- Slam -
Targets a point and sends a shockwave of energy toward it. This spell deals damage to enemies in a line (relatively normal shockwave spell with a better looking effect).

199238-albums6032-picture70129.png

- Mighty Hammer of Callienth -
This spell gains a charge for every 5th enemy killed by our heroes. When the charges are released upon an enemy they deal major damage that is multiplied by the number of charged.

199238-albums6032-picture70128.png

Glainor also has another ability called Last Stand that only becomes usable when his life reaches 25% or less. When used he deals AOE damage equal to the amount of life that he has lost. His armor is also temporarily increased by 100. This is a great spell to get him out of a sticky situation.

Garen Fallowmire (Boss)

This is a mini-boss in Dillianhor Forest. He is the leader of a band of murderous thieves.
This fight is re-playable and can be very different each time it happens. If the heroes can successfully sneak into his hideout the fight will be a little easier since you can melt away his HP before he gets his armor and weapons.

199238-albums6032-picture64461.png

If you surprise him you can fight him unarmed for a while. After his health reaches a certain point he will grab his axe, shield, helmet, and armor. This increases his damage, health, armor, and stats dramatically. This also allows him to use his three abilities.
199238-albums6032-picture64457.png
199238-albums6032-picture64458.png

The idea for the Boss Fights is to have randomization, Garen has three different abilities that are chosen at random. There is a timer that runs his triggered abilities every 8-15 seconds after he is attacked.

1. Call for help - 2 to 6 bandits come to help Garen fight, they are relatively weak, but can prove a nuisance
199238-albums6032-picture64459.png

2. Shield Slam - He instantly bashes with his shield stunning anyone in melee range for 4 seconds and dealing minor damage
199238-albums6032-picture64460.png

3. Vicious Strike - Garen charges his weapon and becomes invulnerable for 2 seconds. He then unleashes a sweeping strike dealing massive damage to any Heroes caught off guard.
199238-albums6032-picture64431.png
199238-albums6032-picture64432.png

Once he's dead he drops a key that allows you to open the chest in his room to get your reward. If you are observant you may also find additional secrets in his room once he is dead.

199238-albums6032-picture64427.png
199238-albums6032-picture64428.png

Gruhmmar (Boss)

This is a boss in the Callienth Mountains. He is summoned by the deadly Necromancer Vor'Tak.
He is the first stage of a 2 staged fight. Once he is defeated you need to kill Vor'Tak himself.

199238-albums6032-picture68327.png

199238-albums6032-picture68328.png

199238-albums6032-picture68329.png

Gruhmmar's abilities are based on blood and death. Vor'Tak also supports Gruhmmar from his perch.

1. Infection - Gruhmmar sprays blood all over the heroes and infects them with poisoned blood. They take damage over time as long as they are within a certain distance of each other. In order to cure themselves of the diseased blood is to move away from each other.
No pictures yet (Still working on this ability)

2. Blood Sacrifice - Vor'Tak aids Gruhmmar by summoning two slow moving sacrifices. You must kill them before they reach Gruhmmar or they will restore a lot of his lost health. It is important to micro manage your units in order to kite Gruhmmar away while you kill the summoned units
199238-albums6032-picture68332.png

199238-albums6032-picture68333.png

199238-albums6032-picture68334.png

3. Summon the Dead - Vor'Tak aids his creation by summoning the dead. He can summon up to 6 skeletal soldiers to aid Gruhmmar. They can be annoying especially if they spawn near your healer.
199238-albums6032-picture68335.png

4. Chomp - This ability is normally an instant kill if not avoided. Gruhmmar becomes invulnerable for a few seconds allowing you to move out of the way before chomping down in front of him.
199238-albums6032-picture68330.png

After Gruhmmar dies, Vor'Tak transports himself along with our heroes to his own hidden realm and to fight him in the second stage of the boss fight.
More screenshots of Vor'Tak and his fight will be added as I finish making it.

The Callienth mountains lie to the west of Dillianhor. They are home to men and dwarves that have grown uncommonly strong in order to combat the harsh and rugged wilderness. Callienth consists of small villages with the great mountain city of Stonehaven to the north. Stonehaven has been carved into the mountain and is the most protected city in all of Milian

Your heroes have a Home Portal ability that allow them to transport to Lithion's house where extra inventory space is available

Lithion's House has extra inventory space in chests, on shelves, in end tables, and on weapon and armor racks

Certain objects are interactive. When they are clicked on they can drop something, bring up a dialog box, or do a number of other things

Once the chest is open you can take the rusty iron shovel inside. This is the first-tier of 15 shovels you can get allowing you to dig for better treasure in certain spots

Special Thanks:
There are so many people to thank and give credits to for making this a reality. The amazing people on hiveworkshop.com and wc3c.net for starters. Thousands of models, tutorials, maps for inspiration, skins, spells, icons, etc. Without those sites this project would have been either extremely boring, or dead a long long time ago.

This list is unfinished, but it has a lot of the random people from THW that have helped me with models, icons, textures, tutorials, loading screens, etc

Author's notes

This project is something I've been working on, redoing, and working on some more simply as a hobby. I have made some decent progress and I'll continue to work on it, but I've got no delusions of being near finished anytime soon. I just wanted to share this with the awesome community on the Hive Workshop. I really couldn't have done half of this without you.

Hmmm, pretty decent terrain out there, but you got some parts that just look messy, and try to fit b2m's models on war3 defaults model is somewhat making my eyes hurt, if you gonna go for hq models then go for it.

And you should find a better hero model.

Thanks for the feedback. I feel like I have to use some lower quality models just because they're aren't enough really good high quality ones out there. I've been trying to blend them together as best I can though. The terrain is also far from finished, I've done and redone things a number of times already.

As far as the hero model goes, the Illidan model is the only one I could find that fit with my hero being blind (which is part of the story)

Who knows maybe I'll find something better later on.

Some of those screenshots are a little older. I have since changed some things. I started terraining without high quality models and had to do a lot of replacing. I'll put up some updated screenies sometime soon.

Thanks for the feedback it makes things a lot easier to work on

Edit: I added some more screenshots (some a little newer) Also organized them a little

Looks really epic! Looking forward more.

Oh and, could you please change my name in the credit list from "Fan", to "PROXY"?

Done, thanks for the heads up.

UPDATE:
-Added some info and screenshots of an early boss fight (I will try to get better screenshots if I can)
-Added some more lore

Hey,
i have to say the idea about that boss who picks up his armor and weapons is really really cool.

About your terrain: most screens look very good, but you seem to use very different types of textures. Some of them are realistic looking textures, some have that wc3 comic style and some are blurry, mixing them looks a bit weird.
199238-albums5858-picture61968.png

The brown/orange rocks on the right side look like toffee

Another problem with the terrain: your terrain has huge differences in the ground level and there are giant cliffs and canyons. While this looks really cool on a screenshot this is often hardly playable. What kind of camera do you use? Standard wc3 cam (very bad with huge cliffs and stuff)? Thirdperson cam?

You might know the project Gaias Retaliation, to deal with these camera problems Zwiebelchen wrote a camera system that adjusts the cameras heigth dependent on its current position.

That screenshot is older and I've gotten rid of most of the low quality texture models.

The camera I use is a regular WC3 camera except I've increased it's distance from the ground to 2500 or even farther on some maps. I had to do this to give it the best look overall and avoid the normal camera problems.

As this is a SRPG, I recommend using an arrow key controlled camera. Simply lock the camera to the hero and then make arrow keys sway/turn it.
Best solution to the terrain height problem.

However, only useful in SRPGs, as its slow as hell in Multi.

The terrain sometimes confuses me. There's areas extremely well made and some areas that show a total lack of almost everything. Almost like two different people making it. :/

Ha ha I know what you mean actually. I have been developing this as long as I have been developing my skills as a terrainer so things have definitely changed as I've worked. So in essence it was two different terrainers: my old self and my new self. Some of the screenshots are older I just haven't taken the time to update them. I am always trying to make it better, but sometimes it's hard to change something when I know how long it took to do in the first place.

Thanks for posting, I've looked into a camera system like that, it always seems a little unwieldy, but maybe I'll look into it again.

This has a lot of potential, although you did do significantly better in some types of terrain than others.

I.E. Stonehaven and the first few Panthelos screenshots looked amazing, but the rest of what was there to show didn't really compare. You need more filler, think of what would be there if the scene was real and add more to it. I know it's difficult, and drudgeous to go into that kind of detail, but it makes all the difference really.
If you need to look at some examples of that kind of stuff, go look at some of the Terrainers' work and the contests. Even though the stuff that they do is for art and not for gameplay, it's still extremely helpful to see how you could add that kind of atmosphere to your game.

But like I said, this has a lot of potential. +rep

Thanks for the support and feedback. As I look back on some of the screenshots I can already see that they are different than they look now. I feel like I'm never satisfied so I'm constantly changing things trying to make them better. I'll just keep working and add some more screenshots soon. But of course there is so much more than just terraining going into these maps so I try to mix it up and work on different aspects to keep myself from getting bored.

Thanks again to everyone who commented. You guys make it easier to keep working.

Here are some more screenshots. I have added some in-game screenshots of some of the areas that people are worried about. I'm currently working on a new camera system that auto adjusts the angle and distance of the camera in certain areas. (Credits to Zwiebelchen for help with that).

Thanks for all the support, it really helps. Here's a few more screenshots of the Callienth Mountains region. There are also some screenshots of the first stage of a boss fight. A necromancer named Vor'Tak has summoned an undead monstrosity named Gruhmmar. Once you kill Gruhmmar you will have to fight the Necromancer himself. I'll add some more info later after I've finished the second stage.

this sir is awesome, incredibly creative terrain and a lot of potential. I have hopes on u cuz you said this is your hobby.

Wow dude, this really is your hobby, I am impressed! Keep up the good work man

Thanks, ya I just really enjoy working on it in my spare time, I'm self employed so I find myself constantly thinking about new ideas while I'm working and I just write them down. Here are a couple of screenshots from a new idea I had. I needed a way to fast travel around the maps so I made stables scattered around. Once you talk to the stable master you activate the stable and can travel instantly between any stables you've activated.

I just read through the story introduction and I like it. Here are some of my thoughts/questions/suggestions.

It seems that Lyrius Windsage absorbs the power that inherits the demon but still dies. Alright, this makes me curious about what you've actually got in mind with the (main?) hero Lithion. My guess would be that he needs to kill demons on his quest to absorb their power to finally become powerful enough to kill some kind of arch enemy? I think that would be cool.. or are such story details still hold secret?

One more question: Is there a charistmatic arch enemy that really draws the players attention and gives him a worthy antagonist? I really think a good story significantly benefits from the quality and development of the enemies. For instance, I think Lord of the Ring, as great as it is, lacks in such terms. The stroy is very black and white, good versus evil and you don't really get to know anything about saurons motives. However, characters can be very interesting if they not just black or white, but something in between. In a story-driven campaign like this, maybe you can play this element to your advantage (if it's not already the case). Well, these are just some thoughts on the story. Anyway, I'm excited how it works out.

Count me in as a beta tester when it's time.
