Equality -- Overkill?

No no one is the same, so no one is equal. I'd even go as far as to say that every human on this planet is completely unequal to the other 6 billion.

The point is that all people should be equally treated, rich and poor, black and white, gay and straight. But they can't be equal on other terms. Otherwise we'd all look and act the same.

Again, not equally treated, given equal opportunities. As in, you give everyone equal opportunities but if some people abuse them then they don't get treated as well as everyone else.

Maybe what you want to say is that people should be judged equally at first glance, and for everyone to be more open-minded and find out whether or not they like the person once they get to know them, and not make a pre-judgment from skin color or religion.

boomwolf: That probably depends on if I were in a sympathetic mood or not. It mostly depends on who would be nicer, which would be either both of them, or the one without the leg.

I'd save the one with the leg. Because he would probably live a better life. I mean, seriously, even with robotic limbs and such, living a life with one leg would blow. Sure, you could get along alright, but if I absolutely had to make the choice and had no option of saving both, I wouldn't take the cripple out of sympathy.

Equal opportunity sounds like some kind of universal solution that people should have thought up earlier. It isn't. Should we be giving all babies equal opportunity at becoming rich by taking them away from their parents and raising them in government institutes without any privileges or flaws? At what point would someone be given a sufficient opportunity at success? Do crippled and retarded people have equal opportunity, and, if not, what kind of privileges would suffice?

You are taking it in the wrong direction. What I meant is that to give everyone you meet the equal opportunity to be a friend or at least someone you respect and not to just judge people before you get to know them.

Equality has? I don't think so, I've seen stuff on racism etc, but I'm not sure about this. Maybe it was overdone a long time ago, but I've been in medivh's tower almost ever since I joined and haven't seen anything like this.

This discussion has emerged from at least two others that I can think of. One of them is the entire PC thread down the page, which you started, and one of them was in the Furries thread, also down the page. The one in the furries thread was also you; comparing sexual paraphilias to racism, where you had, admittedly a completely different view on the matter no you didn't. That took some thinking. I was actually surprised that this thread wasn't immediately closed, because the first posts in both threads whine about the exact same thing.

There's nothing wrong with judging people before you get to know them. We're all judgmental pricks and, more often than not, the little guesses we make are right. Stereotypes can be accurate sometimes, and that's just the way it is.

not everyone is "equal" in real life, but on the internet, everyone is equal. People are trying to find a way to be "individuals" on the internet, but it's all bullshit imo.
