Predicting the future is not the point, the point was, we're going to hell and change is imminent. Or did i get it wrong?

Yes, few years ago, there was a story that said that te world would boom in 2000.
Maybe all you could do about the 2012 apocalypse is to find a way to go space travel for one year (2012) and then come back in 2013. =P

Face it, there is pretty much a doomsday prediction for almost every race. Seems to me that the 2012 is only special because a really ancient culture came up with it.

Hehe, a while back, I've noticed someone constantly changing the estimated date of the Super Large Hadron Collider's creation to 2012 instead of the original 2015. I could have cared less whether this was truth or the work of a really bored vandal, but it just struck me as funny.

This whole thing is all a bit frightening to think about, especially consdering it's totally out of our hands and there is nothing that can be done about it. But as stated before Y2K, the Ice Age, the end of the Mayan Calendar. They are all just ridiculous predictions made by ancient people. The chances that they are correct is one in a million. We don't have the ability to predict the future now, nor did we then.

What's so scary in thinking about it if you can't change it?

Well, we have SOME ability to predict the future.
For example I predict we all gonna die. someday. probably not on the same day.

Wow, what an extraordinary ability you got there... I do not think anybody was referring to that kind of predictions.

I'm fairly sure I can predict my life:
I'll get a job and I'll die.
I must have special abilities!

Bah.
End of the world has been predicted at least ten thousand times by now by all kinds of prophets, scientists, gods and ancient cultures. I admit, the first 10 times must have been interesting and shaking for the world, but it's not funny or scary anymore. If you can show me the Mayan calendars, and do an analysis of the writing and the age of the tablets or whatever it is, so you can prove that it was indeed written by Mayans, not some guy that just left puberty, ill buy 10% of the story. Ill buy the rest when a comet hits us.
And by the way, every culture has a prophecy of a doomsday. What makes Mayans so special?

Can be answered with another quote:

Yes, the only thing that makes the prophecy special is because the mayans were an old civilization. If it was the Massai tribe (I think it is from Zimbabwe), we wouldn't give attention to the prophecy.

It's also the fact that the Mayans were advanced as hell. Accurately calculated the solar year within minutes, and there may (note: MAY) have been one or two things on the calendar that happened.
