I dunno I think the specifications are too narrow. If I were going to enter this contest I would make a marine-type unit with a laser sword.

yeah I guess you are right about that
~Void~, I mean a marine type unit with a laser sword does have a fitting place. Maybe the ranged only condition is an unnecessary restriction. My idea was a bit bias there, as I was thinking along the lines that future warfare = gun warfare, but no, it doesn't have to be.
On a side note the models I am currently working on are of a similar theme, I've got a few cyber punk meshes I've completed. What I intend to do with those is give them ranged animations followed by alternate melee animations (much like druid >> bear form) to try make a game where the player can decide on their attack plan and method depending on the circumstance and what items/upgrades they have.
Do you think a model competition where creating morphing units (of any kind) would be a popular idea?

Just no. For some reason I jsut think this wont work.

LoL! wow, that was pretty blunt aha.... but I'm sure there is a way it could work. What if it was just reduced to a 'sci-fi theme'. Anything from infantry to robots to jetbikes with alien riders? Would that be more appeasing do you think?
My main ideas behind this contest concept was just to introduce a futuristic theme, and to restrict people just enough so that their models would fit close enough to almost be a race.. so in the end everyone is a winner if all the entrants could be used together successfully ingame.
Or.. maybe we could just change the whole thing to a horror theme and have everybody enter model variations of your signature ;O
