If any of you have been remotely connected to the internet in the few months or so, you probably know about minecraft.

So who here plays Minecraft? If we get enough people we might even get a server.

Also feel free to post pics here. I'll start with a WIP of something I've been making for a few days. There's a big mine underneath I'm not showing though.

Well, here's a video of my house, its changed alot since it was posted, but its pretty much the same.

Basicly, its 2 floors lager, that corner made of wool/iron is now just wool, the long room on the 2nd floor holds my iron blocks, and is entered through a hidden door, the cobblestone outside is filled with lava, and there is an underwater "safety shelter" should I do something wrong and wreck my house.

Fair enough. I got to watch another guy playing it (single player) for about 2 hours. Apparently one of his frat brothers is nearly finished with the Mines of Moria. Something like 4 days straight with nothing but minecraft (some food/drink/sleep).

I has minecraft, I went to the very bottom and found the void, it was nasty, lost all my stuff, two diamond pickaxe's, alot of iron, a good amount of redstone, i got pissed at that so I deleted that world...
Heres a thing, Build a giant tower:
Jump and hold left click facing on the bottom and you can put blocks under you feet, use this to create giant towers about 100 blocks high and put torches all the way up! So whenever you get lost you just look up into the sky and you'll see ya tower, and btw getting down might be harder >.>

Just make a 4xlenthoftowerherex2 hole full of water source blocks at the bottom, and you wont take fall damage.

Also, giant glass spheres full of lava are better then torchs IMO.

Today on minecraft, I made a house out of only glass, and then dug a huge tunnel into the underground (to bedrock) and made a mob farming filter thingy so now I am farming everything you can get from mobs excluding string =P

More or less, they are pulled in to hole by the currant, (they will not die from falling damage, I tested this) then they're pulled down into a small space were they cannot move/escape/etc. and drown, the drop is then moved to the collection point through a 1 block gap from the 'drowning chamber'

Yes, you can get the free game - the alpha - but it doesn't have many extra things, really the free game is just a "lego" type building engine, buying the game is what gets you survival mod (along with things like mine carts - pretty much anything you interact with).
-Note that only the alpha has multiplayer atm

Yeah, i think natural houses are pretty ownage too.
But the "Normal" houses can be darn bad-ass sometimes. :P
For example i have a floating villa on one of my computers, complete with lava vents to burn mobs stupid enough to hang around below it.

On my other computer though i cut out a temple in a stone cliff, and instead of having an actual door or a blockade to keep out monsters i just added a hell load of booby traps to keep out annoying mobs.

Protip: build somewhere a bit high, so creeps wont reach you - preferably in the sky.
If you're lucky there will be a floating island in your world, sometimes its awesome to create your own aswell too - as you can plant trees on it.

It's got all the guides you need, even though i only use it reluctantly.

And yeah, Minecraft is f****** scary sometimes. Which actually has root in it's simplicity.

Also, let me give you a small monster guide:
Zombies:
The guys that make the moaning sound.
Avoid unless you are carrying a sword, and spam-hit them if you are forced to fight.

Skeletons:
They make a rattling noice like bones that are stripped of meat falling ontop of each other.
They shoot arrows at you, and should be avoided if possible.
Take precautions if enountered, and run in zig-zags when fleeing.

Spiders:
Spiders are tricky, as they jump more frequently and in some cases longer than other mobs. They are also faster.
They make a hissing noice, and should be avoided unless properly equipped.
They do NOT burn and die when the sun comes around, but they seem to disappear after a while if left alone.

Creepers (AKA Exploding Penixes):
I cant remember what sound these guys make, but they're pretty darn deadly.
Not only do they hang around all day even when the sun's out, but they explode if you get too close to them.
The best way to kill them is to just stand on a ledge a few blocks above them and then picking them off with a sword.
Note that they ONLY explode when near you, and that they cannot explode at will to for example blow up your door.
So unless you are near them they cannot do any damage to you or your house.
But if you ARE near them then the explosion will deal damage to all blocks and objects nearby.
So if there's a creeper outside your door: DONT GO F****** NEAR IT.
If you do you will be one door poorer.
They do though drop gunpowder, which is a valueable resource, so they are worth killing if possible.

WARNING!
If you are deep underground and hear monster sounds then there's a cavern nearby.
Since the sun cant reach them underground then monsters will spawn continously down there until torches are set up.
While caverns can be awesome places to mine they can also be your grave.
They are full of lava and monsters, and they can be harder to get out of than you think.

REMINDER:
Monsters can not destroy your stuff.
As far as i know they cant even kill your torches.
But if you die, you drop all the items you are carrying and are sent back to the spawn point.
If you dont get them items back within a certain period of time they will disappear.

I still jump whenever a skeleton arrow spontaneously forms out of the darkness, and I deign to approach a creeper(splode).

I'm at a point of minecraft veterancy where I've gotten to experimenting with more complex designs and mechanics, such as balistics(cannons) or electronics(redstone logic circuits). There is always something bigger and badder to build, but I'll be trying to design structures with integral electronic infrastructure with my newfound knowledge.

Rumor's been going around that they've been disabled on accident, or they've been modified to spawn in darkness only. Either way, they still only appear at the bottom 10 layers.

I'm liking the "nether" dimension, its allowed for a lot more complex design in many things. I'm working on a new lighthouse tower design that uses hellstone as the source of light, rather then lava. I have a largish one already, but its still experimental in terms of construction, and I want to incorporate more lightstone too.

Hey, I just paid for Minecraft yesterday, and started playing it. I allready think I'm going to be addicted like the rest of you, but it's REALLY hard to find enough coal, and if they intend to remove permanency from torches in complete version, then I hope they make coal more available aswell.
Maybe I just need to search more caves, but then I need more torches aswell so I can at least see the coal.

But the challenges of the game are worth it, especially because the reward is essentially another slice of free creativity, and the challenges are also there so your creativity can make some sense. It's really great!

I thought the gaps only existed in maps generated prior to the Halloween update, and bedrock was indestructable. Check Minepedia (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Void).

Just read this dude, i say all the info.Just deleted the burned world, and no burning trees doesnt give coal, just doom, i couldnt get out of my base without getting burned.Now i based on a semi-floating island, i destroyed it a lot to get on it and so mobs cant reach me.Also, if i jump i go over the clouds, so i made a little tower to see whole my world.

Slimes spawn is broken so you wont find any. You best bet is to wander through the night and find a place that has coal.
If you dont have a pickaxe make one.

My current part-stone-part-glass house, I tried the wiki recommendation of surrounding the house with water. The water tactic occasionally works well in drowning the mobs and washing their drops right into my basement, but there's more to learn.

But my joy is the roller coster I built around the house. Just another thing for me to do when I'm trying to pass the time during the night. Other nights I like to stand at my house's high point at observe the lavafall in the distance.

I plan to make something different for my next new game. Maybe with increased difficulty too as the current game is getting boring.

Anyone making an underwater base should do this:
1: Make a nice lake with enough space for your base.
Do not try to make an underwater base in the sea unless you're up for some real work.
2: Set up the shape of how you want your base to look with dirt.
3: Cover said shape with whatever you want your walls to be made of.
4: Add an entrance that looks like this:
[UPPER WALLS]------
[DOOR]---[1-2 FREE SPACE]---[DOOR]
[LOWER WALLS]------
To enter or exit your house without it getting flooded make sure atleast one of the doors are closed at all times.
5: Enter your house and start holing out the dirt.

That worked for me at least.

EDIT: Ohyeah, you can also just make a house in a big hole and then fill it with water afterwards.

If you mean w/o deleting your saves, I read somewhere that the Halloween Update was compatible with older saves, so people could build the portal frame and then activate it in the same saves when the Halloween Update came.

huh? I always make my underwater bases in the sea, with the right technique, it's no harder than making a normal house. I call it sand-filtering

build a sand 'foundation' (if you want it floating in the middle of the sea)
build ur base outta glass, but leave a space left at the chosen exit point fill the base with sand (any block will do but I use sand cos it's next to the sea), (removing indoor water), remove the sand: done (I recommend at least a stone spade), remember, all underwater bases need an exit, so you'll either A. attach it to the underground beneath the sea or B. use one other block to stick a door on.

You shouldn't lose your saves if you upgrade versions. It's a known bug and can happen, were your saves will be deleted on accident, but its very, very rare.

In case your wondering, that canal system is 4 blocks wide, fully boat traversable, and took me 27 shovels and 24 pickaxes to complete because I didn't know about the durability glitch that lets you never break tools.

Also the lava moat is kind of fail at the moment because you can't go to the Nether in multiplayer to get lava and I'm too damn lazy to actually fill it in completely.

Mapping devices are not really cheats... They do not show more than is already known (although they can allow you to see stuf you normally miss).

Anyway, I read that if you dig down a lot and dig a tunnel you will eventually find them. As once you are near one, the music will change even if the dungeon is not visible.

Found a huge cave that had a crapload of iron, coal and gold it also had two dungeons on it. I raided both dungeons, I also found natural obsidian and diamond.
So im really happy.

If anyone hasn't gotten it yet, the Painterly Pack (http://painterlypack.net/) is awesome. Makes the game look significantly better without any performance drops (its just a texture pack).

Also problem with playing on a server is that monsters are buggy as shit in multiplayer (tons of them spawn, invisible creepers, that kind of stuff), so you generally want to disable them. Still fun though.
